My aunt asked me a simple AI question at Thanksgiving dinner in Ohio
She saw me using a text-to-image tool and asked if these AI programs actually think, or just guess. I tried explaining training data and probability, but it got me wondering where the line is between smart and just fast. Her follow-up was, "So could it ever feel hurt if I insult its pictures?" That stuck with me for weeks. Are we building tools or something closer to minds, and does it even matter if we can't tell the difference?
