Tried training a model on my own photos versus using a pre-trained one, the difference was INSANE

Heard a buddy spent weeks fine-tuning a model on his vacation pics. The thing started recognizing his dog's specific fur patterns and weird shadows from his backyard. My man said the pre-trained stuff just gave him generic "dog" or "tree" labels.

My cousin did that with his old Honda Civic. The stock image finder just called it a car, but after he trained his own model, it could spot the specific dent on the passenger door from a 2007 hailstorm. That's the whole point, right. The big models are trained on everything, so they only see the general idea. You teach it on your own junk, it learns your personal clutter. It's like the difference between someone knowing you have a dog and someone who can tell which couch cushion it always sleeps on.
