Just watched OpenAI's live demo of their new voice mode and it's wild
I caught the stream yesterday afternoon and honestly my jaw dropped. They showed a person talking to ChatGPT in real time with emotion and pauses and even interrupting. The AI actually laughed at a joke and then corrected itself when the person said 'wait that's wrong'. It felt like watching two friends chat not a robot and a human. The demo had someone ask for a bedtime story and the AI changed its voice to sound sleepy halfway through lol. I still think there are privacy issues with always on microphones but the tech itself is crazy impressive. Has anyone else tried the alpha or is it still invite only?

The creepiest part nobody mentions is how easy it'll be for companies to just record everything you say and use it to train their models. Like cool we got robot friends now but also Amazon probably listening to every awkward silence lol.

Caught a piece on NPR last week about a study where they tested smart speakers and found they're basically always listening, just buffering audio locally until they hear a wake word. But the real kicker was how often they misfire and send bits of conversation to the cloud anyway. @joseph_coleman you're spot on about the awkward silence thing, I had a friend who said his Alexa randomly sent a recording of him arguing with his roommate to his contacts. It's not even about the models at that point, it's just how sloppy the whole setup still is.
