Question about the constant hype around 'AGI is near' claims from certain labs
In my experience, every time a major company like DeepMind or OpenAI releases a new benchmark score, tech news outlets run with these 'AGI is just around the corner' stories, but they almost never mention the huge gap between narrow task performance and actual general reasoning, which matters because it sets unrealistic public expectations and, frankly, I know this from reading the actual research papers where the authors themselves caution against this interpretation.

Totally get where you're coming from. It's frustrating to see the headlines miss the real point of the research. I've read those papers too, and the authors are always careful to list the model's limits. The jump from a good test score to something that can actually think and reason is massive, but that never makes the news. It does set people up for a letdown when the next big thing isn't actually that big. Makes you wonder if the hype is more for funding than honest talk about the tech.

My friend got so excited about a new AI tool last month, just like @loganburns said. Then he tried it and saw it was just good at one specific test, not actually smart. The hype really does set people up for disappointment.
