My mom's toaster oven taught me more about cooking than any fancy gadget, and my air fryer reminded me of that last Tuesday
My mom used a beat up toaster oven for close to 20 years, and she could nail a batch of garlic bread in it without looking at a timer. Last Tuesday I was messing with my air fryer trying to crisp up some leftover pizza, and I caught myself hovering over it like it was some kind of science project. I burned the first slice because I kept opening the basket to check on it, which is exactly what she always yelled at me for doing with her oven door. She passed a few years back, but I still hear her voice whenever I get impatient with a recipe. Does anyone else find they cook better when they just trust the thing and walk away?
Used to roll my eyes at the whole "just leave it alone" thing, figured hovering was how you keep stuff from burning. But my grandma's old cast iron skillet humbled me last month, she never touched it while stuff cooked and everything came out perfect. Now I set a timer and go do literally anything else, works way better.
