The toast setting lied to me, burned my bagels twice in a row

I set my air fryer to 350 for 4 minutes thinking it would toast bagels like the manual said, but they came out black and rock hard last Saturday. I had to scrape them with a butter knife and eat them anyway because it was 7am and I was already late. Does anyone else find that the default presets are way too hot for anything bready, or is it just my unit?

...so my friend Jake had the exact same thing happen with his air fryer last month. He was making those frozen empanada things and figured the preset for "pastry" would be fine, but nope, they came out looking like charcoal briquettes. He actually threw one at the wall in frustration and it bounced off without breaking, which honestly made me laugh so hard I cried a little. He ended up eating around the burnt edges and texting me a blurry photo of the damage like it was a crime scene. Anyway, he figured out that anything with a 3 in the temperature usually means it's about to be a fire hazard, so now he just sets everything to 300 and checks it every two minutes like a hawk. The manual might say one thing, but the machine clearly has its own violent opinions about bread products.
