Got a weird vibration report on a Cessna 172 last Tuesday, traced it to a worn pulley bracket.
The bracket looked fine until I wiggled it and saw a hairline crack. Anyone else had a sneaky bracket failure like that?

Man, a hairline crack you only see when you wiggle it? That's the stuff of nightmares. Those hidden stress fractures are so easy to miss on a quick look. Really makes you second guess every other bracket you've signed off on lately. Glad you caught it before it let go completely.

Been there with a steel beam connection last year. Started using a bright penlight at a low angle to cast shadows across the surface. Any tiny imperfection throws a shadow you can't miss. It adds maybe two minutes per check but it's saved my butt more than once. That and a quick tap with a wrench to listen for a change in ring.
