Had a 30 year A&P tell me I was overthinking my engine inspections last week
He said I spent too much time staring at borescope photos and not enough time checking the oil filter for metal, and now I switched up my whole routine - anyone else get called out for focusing on the wrong thing?

...and he said "staring at borescope photos" like that's some kind of waste of time? Bro, I can't even. That's literally how I caught a cracked exhaust valve guide on my Bonanza three years ago, and my A&P was like "you see ghosts in borescope shadows." Then the cylinder dropped compression at the next annual and he had to eat crow. I mean sure, oil filters catch the big stuff, but if you're not looking at what's combusting and sealing, you're flying blind until something breaks and makes metal.

Is it just me or does this kind of thing happen everywhere now? People getting defensive when you try to look at the actual details instead of just trusting the surface level stuff. Kinda feels like we're all just expected to accept what we're told and not ask questions anymore, right?
