Just had a Cessna 172 come in for an annual in Phoenix with a weird vibration at cruise. Found a crack in the engine mount that was painted over.

Ever notice how this is just the "good enough" attitude in its final form? Someone saw that crack, knew it was wrong, and decided paint was cheaper than a weld. You see it everywhere, from patched up code to quick fix home repairs. It's the same shortcut mindset, just with way higher stakes when it's holding an engine on.

Way higher stakes" feels like a stretch though. How often does painted-over engine damage actually cause a crash?
