Watched a senior mechanic swap a gearbox in 45 minutes last week... changed how I prep

I used to think rushing through the initial inspection was fine because I could fix issues as they came up. But this guy spent 15 minutes just checking alignment marks and cleaning threads before touching a single bolt. His swap took half the time mine usually does because nothing fought him. Over a 6 month period I've been tracking my own jobs and realized I spend way more time on rework than I thought. Seeing that before and after difference in person convinced me to slow down on the front end. Anyone else had a mentor's method totally flip how you approach a common task?

Holy crap, 15 minutes just on checking alignment marks? That's insane but I get it. Clean threads and perfect alignment save you so much grief later. I might try that on my next brake job just to see if it cuts down my headache time.

Nah, I'm gonna push back on this one. Honestly, spending 15 minutes just staring at alignment marks on a brake job? That's overkill for most people. You're not building a space shuttle, you're stopping a Honda Civic. The real trick is just being careful with your tools and taking your time on the actual install, not obsessing over marks that can shift if you sneeze on them. Tbh, I've done plenty of brake jobs in under an hour total and never touched alignment marks. Clean threads and good torque specs matter way more. Ngl, this feels like one of those internet tips that makes you feel smart but doesn't actually save time or headaches in the real world.
