Appreciation post: A nurse's request for pet alerts flipped my thinking on security

Last Tuesday, I was putting in a wireless system at a downtown apartment. The client, a nurse who works nights, asked if we could send alerts to her dog walker's phone app. That question really STOPPED me. It hit me that for her, a safe home meant knowing her dog was okay while she was gone. We added a cheap camera to watch the living room, and she was SO happy. Now, I make a point to ask every client about pets, kids, or anyone else who might need to know. That extra minute of chat changes everything. It turns a basic install into something that truly fits their life.

A similar pet request completely changed how I think too.

Actually it's funny because looking back, I don't think the pet itself changed my thinking. What changed me was realizing why I made the request in the first place. Like when my kid begged for a dog, saying it was about responsibility. But after we got one, I saw it was really about him wanting a reason to go outside more. The pet was just the way to get there.

Turns out @the_faith is totally onto something about pets being a gateway. My cat was basically my excuse to finally make my apartment feel like a real home instead of just a place I slept. That animal gave me a sense of belonging I didn't even know I was looking for.
