Heard a customer in line at the hardware store say 'it's just a beep' about their panel. Made me think about how we explain things.

Thirty bucks for a basic smoke alarm that chirps at 3am? That beep cost me a full hour of sleep last month, ended up pulling the battery and forgetting to replace it for two days. The real problem is those interconnected systems where one detector going off sets off the whole house, and you're running around at 1am trying to figure out which one is the culprit. So no, it's not "just a beep" when you're the one holding a broom handle to the ceiling trying to get it to shut up.

Oh man, that "just a beep" line is a classic. Tell that to the person whose entire night is now ruined (right, @roberts.jordan?). It's never just a beep when you're the one lying there staring at the ceiling, wondering what secret code it's trying to tell you.
