Accidentally caught 20 salmon in 2 hours near Seward and it changed how I prep gear

I was out on Resurrection Bay last weekend and my reel seized up from salt spray after the third fish. Now I bring a spare spool and rinse everything with fresh water right after getting back to the dock. Has anyone else had their gear fail at the worst time on the Kenai?

Twenty salmon in two hours, that reel didn't just seize up it gave up. Was it an old reel or did the salt just hit it at the worst angle?

Brought my cheapie backup rod and it snapped on the third cast.
