Appreciation post: My old way of packing for a float trip was a total joke
I used to cram everything into one big dry bag until a guide on the Kenai River saw me and asked if I was trying to sink my own raft. Now I split gear into three smaller bags, and it actually floats. How do you guys organize your boat loads?

Yeah, that guide probably saved your bacon. Learned the hard way to keep a tiny "oh crap" bag on my person after watching a dry bag full of clothes just sail downriver without me.

Actually, a dry bag full of clothes is exactly what you want to lose. The real problem is losing your fire kit or first aid. That's the stuff that needs to be on you.

That's a solid system, but careful with just three bags. If one gets swamped or lost, you're out a third of your gear. I always pack a critical small bag with fire, first aid, and a radio that stays lashed to me, not the boat.
