Denali Highway gravel vs paved sections and why I'm done with the pavement

After driving the Denali Highway three times last summer, I finally realized the gravel sections near Cantwell gave me way better wildlife viewing than the smoother paved parts closer to Paxson. The slower speed on gravel meant I spotted a lynx and two moose calves, while on pavement I was just gripping the wheel dodging potholes and missing everything. Am I crazy for actually preferring the washboard roads for day trips, or do you guys find the same thing out there?

...and it's funny you say that because I've been noticing the same thing in totally different parts of my life. Like last week I took the back roads instead of the highway to get to a brewery and ended up finding this hidden little taco stand I never would have seen if I was just zooming past. You're not crazy at all. The whole "slower is better" thing applies to so much more than just driving.

Gravel roads always deliver the goods.
