Finally saw the northern lights from my own backyard in Fairbanks after 3 winters of missing them
Lived in Fairbanks for almost 4 years now and I had never once seen the aurora from my own house. Every time there was a good forecast I would either sleep through my alarm or it would cloud up at the last minute, and last winter I drove out to Cleary Summit twice just to sit in my truck for 2 hours and see nothing. Anyway last Tuesday my neighbor knocked on my door around 11pm and just said "get out here." I threw on my coat over my pajamas and stood in the yard and the whole sky was green, moving like slow waves, with a pink edge along the top. I stayed out there almost an hour and my fingers went numb but I did not care at all. My phone camera picked up way more color than my eyes did, which was kind of funny. So for anyone else in town who keeps missing it, what spots do you watch for a good forecast, and do you trust the apps or just look up?
Seems like a lot of fuss for some green light in the sky. The apps are mostly junk, by the way. They'll tell you it's a great night and then you get clouds, or they say nothing and it blows up at 2am. Best bet is just keeping an eye on the sky yourself and having a neighbor who yells at you, which you apparently already have. That said, good job finally catching it, took you long enough.
