Hot take: renting a car in Anchorage saved me $400 over the bus tours, here's the one thing I checked first
Flew into Anchorage last month for 6 days and almost booked the $180 per person glacier bus tour, which for two of us would've been $360 before tips. Instead I rented a compact for $52 a day and put about 700 miles on it. The one thing that saved me was checking tire tread before I left the lot, because the first car they handed me had maybe 4/32 left and that's sketchy on the Seward Highway. I asked for a different one and the guy didn't even blink, just swapped the keys. Also filled up in Wasilla instead of Girdwood and saved almost 60 cents a gallon. Anyone else rent up there, did you bother with the gravel road coverage add on?
That bit about checking tire tread before leaving the lot is smart and I wish I had done it. The car I got in Anchorage had decent tires but the washer fluid was empty and I did not find out until the windshield was a mess on the drive to Seward. Now I always pop the hood and check the basics before I pull out.
