Hot take: that $400 fish finder I bought for Kenai River salmon fishing was either the best or worst money I ever spent

Totally get it man. I dropped $350 on a unit for the Russian River last summer and half the time I felt like a genius finding the deep holes and the other half I was just staring at a blank screen wondering why I didn't just fish the way my grandpa did. It's a love hate thing for sure.

Man I hear you on the Russian River. Dropped $300 on a Lowrance unit myself and spent more time fiddling with settings than actually casting. Half the fun is just guessing where the fish are anyway, right? Sometimes all that tech just gets in the way of a quiet day on the water.

...and the thing is, even when that blank screen stares back at you, I still catch myself poking at it like I'm gonna will some fish into showing up. My buddy Joe went the other way, bought one of those cheap handheld sonar things you cast out like a lure, and honestly he has way less headaches than me with my big screen. Last time out on the Russian I actually left mine in the truck on purpose, just threw on some coffee and went off memory. Found this hole near a fallen log I hadn't hit in years, pulled out three decent smallmouths just guessing. Makes you wonder if we're overthinking something that's been working fine for generations.
