I finally switched from a synthetic to a wool base layer for winter hikes
My old setup left me damp and cold on a trek near Hatcher Pass last November, but a buddy insisted I try a merino wool top. Anyone have a go-to brand that holds up after a season of heavy use?

Honestly, that switch is a game changer for sure. My merino stuff from a few years back pilled like crazy and got thin spots fast, even the so-called heavy duty brands. Found myself going back to a good synthetic grid fleece for most things, it just dries so much faster when you're really moving.

Did you read that article from a few months back comparing different wool blends? @allen.terry is spot on, I switched to an 85/15 blend and it's held up way better than any pure merino I've owned.

That pilling and thinning issue is a real pain, and it's exactly why I'm picky about my wool now. Look for a blend with a little nylon or something similar in it, like 85% wool/15% other fabric. It keeps the good parts of wool but stops it from falling apart so fast. My old pure merino stuff turned into a fuzzy mess after one hard season, but the blended one I've got now still looks decent. Just don't expect it to dry as quick as a synthetic when you're soaked through.
