My neighbor in Fairbanks told me I was running my wood stove wrong for 3 winters

He saw me loading it up full of birch logs and said I was starving the fire. Told me to leave more space between the logs and keep the draft open longer before dampening it down. House stayed warmer with way less wood. Anyone else get told they've been doing something basic wrong for years?

Three winters! That's wild. I've been burning wood for eight seasons and only learned last year from a guy at the hardware store that you're supposed to stack the kindling in a teepee shape, not just toss it in a pile. My whole life feels like a lie now. He showed me how to leave air gaps between the logs and it cut my ash cleanout time in half. Still can't believe your neighbor just watched you struggle for three years before saying anything. Some people just assume everyone already knows.

Teepee method works but try the star pattern with a fatwood center instead.
