PSA: I was totally wrong about needing a huge cooler for a day trip to the Kenai River

After watching a local guide in Cooper Landing pack a single sandwich and a water bottle into a small insulated sleeve for a full 8-hour day, I realized I'd been hauling way too much stuff and overcomplicating everything, so what's your go-to minimal kit for a long day out fishing or hiking?

Totally get that. I mean, I used to bring a whole backpack but now I just shove a couple granola bars and a filter bottle in my fishing vest. Makes moving around so much easier.

Switched to a small hip pack last season and it changed everything. Stuffed a rain shell, a bag of trail mix, and a tiny fire starter kit in there. Still had room for my fly box and tippet. Felt way more free scrambling over rocks without a backpack pulling me around.

Honestly that sounds like a great way to have a bad time. I pack a real lunch, extra layers, a full first aid kit, and plenty of water. The weather can turn in five minutes and you're miles from your truck. @the_finley might be fine with just granola bars, but I get hangry and cold. That local guide gets paid to be miserable, I'm out there to actually enjoy myself.
