So I figured out a way to keep my truck's door seals from freezing shut at 20 below

I smeared a thin coat of plain silicone grease on them in October, and they haven't stuck once all winter in Fairbanks. What do you guys use when it gets that cold?

Wait, silicone grease actually swells rubber? I've been using it on my truck's weatherstripping for like three winters now and never noticed anything. Are you sure that's accurate? I'm seriously questioning everything I thought I knew about winter prep right now. I mean, I picked that trick up from an old mechanic up in Nome and he swore by it. Guess I better go check my seals before they crack in this deep freeze.

Silicone grease can actually damage some rubber seals over time. It makes them swell up and get brittle. A dry silicone spray or a specific rubber protectant is a much safer bet. That stuff is made not to break down the material.

Totally agree, that swelling is no joke. Learned the hard way with some old car door seals that cracked after using the wrong stuff. Now I just stick with the spray protectant made for rubber.
