Spent $400 on a used snowmachine and it was the best money I ever burned in Fairbanks
Everybody in this state keeps telling new folks to drop big money on a new rig or don't bother, and I think that is flat wrong. I picked up a beat up 1997 Skidoo for $400 off a guy in North Pole three winters back, and it has hauled firewood, dragged my sled out to the cabin, and gotten me home in weather that would have stranded a nicer machine. Sure, I have put maybe $150 into belts and a used clutch, and yes it smokes like crazy and the seat is held together with duct tape. The popular take seems to be that you need a $12,000 machine to really get out there, but mine has never left me walking, not once. My neighbor spent $9,000 on his and it sat in the shop for six weeks last season waiting on a part from Outside. I just think a cheap beater you are not scared to scratch up on the trail beats a showroom sled every time. What did your first winter rig cost you, and did it hold up or leave you hitching a ride back to town?
