That gravel road to McCarthy is overhyped, I'll stick to the paved route

Drove out to McCarthy last summer. Everyone told me you have to take the McCarthy Road for the 'real Alaska experience.' 60 miles of washboard gravel. Dust so thick I had to replace my truck's air filter after. Took me almost 3 hours to go 60 miles. Then I found out there's a paved alternative through Glenallen that's only 20 minutes longer. Sure, you miss the old railroad trestle views. But my suspension didn't need realigning after. Plus I could actually hold a conversation without grit in my teeth. Anyone else skip the gravel and just drive the pavement to Wrangell-St. Elias?

What kind of shape was your truck in after that drive?

Drove it once, never again. My back hurt for a week after.
