Thought I knew the Denali Highway because I'd driven it in July, then a guy in Cantwell set me straight
Pulled into the gas station in Cantwell last August bragging about how I'd done the whole 135 miles to Paxson the summer before, and this old timer just laughed at me. He asked if I'd ever run it after breakup, and when I said no, he told me the frost heaves in June will bottom out a truck that cruised fine in July. I'd been telling everyone the road was easy this whole time, and I was dead wrong. Anybody got a real window for when that stretch actually smooths out?
Did the old timer also tell you the road eats windshields in May? Because I learned that one the hard way, thought my truck could handle anything after a mellow July trip, then hit a heave near the Susitna that launched my coffee straight into the dash. Locals say it usually settles down by mid to late June, but it changes every year depending on how fast the thaw goes. My rule now is call the DOT office in Cantwell before I even think about heading out.
