Tried driving my car through a snow drift like the locals do in Fairbanks. Bad idea.

Moved up here from the lower 48 last fall and thought I knew how to handle snow. Hit a drift on Chena Ridge Road going 15 mph and got stuck for 45 minutes until a guy in a lifted truck pulled me out. Learned that Alaskan snow drifts are basically concrete with a fluffy top layer. Anyone else have a humbling first winter moment in AK?

Fairbanks snow drifts are no joke. Concrete with a fluffy top layer is exactly right. You learn fast to just stay out of them.

Oh man, I feel this. My first winter I tried to drive up a hill with a little ice on it and just spun in place for like 20 minutes before giving up and walking home. The locals probably had a good laugh watching me from their windows.
