Why does nobody talk about carving your own fishing lures from beach driftwood?

I found some weathered wood on a trip to Homer last month and decided to try making a lure... It took a few tries to get the shape right, but holding that finished hook feels amazing. The paint job mimics a local salmon pattern, which was fun to research. Now I'm planning to test it out on my next river trip. Something about using materials from the coast just makes it more special.

Can a fish even tell the difference between a store lure and a cool story? They just see food, but we get to remember finding the wood and making it work. That's the whole point, not the fish's opinion.

Who cares if the fish notice? It's about the guy holding the rod. That personal touch makes the whole trip better.

Try telling the fish your lure is handmade. See if they care about the paint job.
