Had to choose between subbed and dubbed for a rewatch of Ghost in the Shell yesterday
I went with subbed because the voice acting felt more natural for that cyberpunk vibe, but now I'm curious if anyone else picks one based on the genre or just sticks with what they're used to?

Dubbed all the way for Ghost in the Shell. The English cast is stacked with voice actors who have been doing anime for decades, and they bring a certain weight to the dialogue that the Japanese version just doesn't capture for me. Plus, when you are watching a complex show like that, having to read subtitles means you miss half the visual detail in the backgrounds and action scenes. I think people get too hung up on needing things to be "authentic" when really, a good dub lets you focus on the art and the story. It is not about being lazy, it is about getting the full experience of the animation without your eyes glued to the bottom of the screen.

Honestly never thought about it that way until now. I used to be one of those sub purists for everything, especially Ghost in the Shell because I figured the Japanese cast was the only way to get the right atmosphere. But you make a solid point about missing visual details, I remember rewatching the first movie and noticing so much more background stuff I missed while reading subs, like the subtle reflections in the water and the little details in the city architecture. The English cast for Stand Alone Complex is genuinely stacked too, like Richard Epcar and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn are perfect for Batou and the Major. Might actually give the dub a real shot on my next rewatch, especially for the philosophical parts where I want to soak in the animation rather than scanning text.
