My cousin in Sacramento swears subs are better than dubs and he made me watch 3 episodes to prove it
So last weekend I was at my cousin's place in Sacramento and we got into this whole argument about subbed vs dubbed anime, which I know is like the oldest fight in the fandom. He sits me down and makes me watch 3 episodes of the same show, first in English then in Japanese with subs, and he's pausing it every 30 seconds to point at stuff. I went in fully ready to defend dubs because I hate reading while eating, but honestly by the second episode I started noticing how the English voice actors were adding these little laughs and sighs that weren't in the original at all. He said something that stuck with me, he goes "you're not hearing the show, you're hearing somebody's idea of the show." I still think dubs are fine for action stuff where I'm not missing plot, but for anything with quiet emotional scenes I might actually switch over now. It was weird because I expected him to just dunk on me but he actually admitted some dubs beat the original, which I did not see coming. Has anyone else had a moment like this where somebody's specific examples actually changed your mind on something you'd been stubborn about for like 10 years?
