Rewatching Attack on Titan after a buddy's rant totally flipped my opinion

I was at a con last summer and this guy spent like 10 minutes explaining how the show is actually about cycles of hatred and not just giant monsters. I always thought it was overhyped edge stuff but his breakdown of season 2's forest scene made me give it another shot. Anyone else have a show that clicked for you after someone forced you to see it differently?

Had the exact same thing happen to me with Madoka Magica. Buddy kept saying it's not what it looks like and I was like "sure, magical girls, real deep" only to be sobbing in my car after episode 3. Felt like the biggest fool for thinking I had it figured out... trailers really do lie.
