That one guy who explained filler episodes like a pro

I was at a small anime watch party in Phoenix last month, maybe 8 people, and this one dude kept skipping ahead during a show I was new to. I asked why he was rushing past half the season and he said 'filler is just the show's way of padding the runtime so the manga can get ahead.' He then showed me a site that lists which episodes are filler and which are canon, and now I never watch a series blind. Has anyone else had a moment where one person's simple explainer just clicked for you?

But is skipping filler really the best way to watch a show, or are you just cheating yourself out of the full experience? Some filler episodes are actually great for building character or just having fun, and a lot of the time those episodes give you inside jokes that the rest of the fanbase still references years later. Skipping them based on some random list feels like you're watching the show just to finish it, not to enjoy it.
