Tried watching an anime in Japanese with no subs, got totally lost by episode 2

Last month I thought I'd challenge myself (and save some time) by watching Attack on Titan in Japanese without any subtitles. By episode 2 I realized I had no clue what was happening, I thought Eren was talking about lunch but he was actually yelling about titans. Learned that my 3 years of casual listening wasn't enough to follow fast-paced dialogue, especially with all the character names. Has anyone else tried this and actually pulled it off, or am I just way overestimating my ear?

Episode 5 of Samurai Champloo broke me too. Try a slice-of-life anime first.

Did you try something with a simpler plot first? I made the same mistake with a slow drama series and still got mixed up.
