Tried watching 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' after hearing it was the best anime ever
I sat through all 26 episodes and the End of Evangelion movie, and honestly, I found it kind of a mess. Everyone talks about the deep themes, but for me, the confusing plot and the way Shinji acts just made it hard to enjoy. Has anyone else felt let down by a super famous show everyone else loves?

The show is a mess on purpose, that's the whole point. The confusing plot mirrors how lost and scared the characters are. Shinji is hard to watch because he's a realistic portrait of a broken kid, not a hero. The ending is about accepting that life is messy and painful, not about tying up a neat story.
