Unpopular opinion: I was wrong about how to watch older anime series

I used to tell new fans to start with the original 1997 'Berserk' anime, saying the older art style was key. A friend in my local club in Springfield told me point blank, 'You're setting people up to quit. The ending is a cliffhanger that goes nowhere.' I changed my advice. Now I suggest reading the first three manga volumes instead, which give a complete story arc. Has anyone else had to change a strong recommendation after getting pushback?
