Spent 3 hours on a fridge that just needed a door switch reset

Got a call for a Samsung RF28 that wouldn't cool right, and I was sure it was the evaporator fan. After replacing it and checking the board, I finally found the service manual note about the door switch test mode. Have you ever had a simple reset eat up a whole morning?

That's not a reset, that's a diagnostic mode. The door switch test puts the fridge into a forced defrost cycle to check switch function. It's a specific service step, not something a customer would ever find. Those hidden modes are why the manual is the first thing to check, even when you're sure you know the fault.

Actually had a customer find that exact mode last week. They held the right buttons by accident while cleaning the panel. Thought they broke it. These things aren't as hidden as they used to be. A lot of service info ends up online now too. People dig around and find it.

Learned that one the hard way a few years back on a Samsung fridge. Had a customer who found a forced defrost mode online and kept triggering it thinking it was drying out the freezer. Took me a solid hour watching it cycle to figure out what was going on. Now I always ask people if they've looked up any "tricks" before I dig in. Saves a lot of head scratching.
