Spent $40 on a cheap multimeter and it nearly cost me a fridge compressor
Picked up a no-name meter from Amazon last month to test a start relay. Turned out the readings were way off, I almost swapped a good compressor until a buddy checked it with his Fluke. Has anybody else been burned by cheap testing gear?

My buddy Mark fried two ECU pins on his Civic using a $15 meter from Harbor Freight. Cost him $300 and a weekend of headaches to fix.

That "fried two ECU pins" part makes me wonder if the meter itself was really the problem or maybe he had it on the wrong setting. Usually cheap meters won't fry anything unless you accidentally probe a live circuit on the wrong range, which can happen with any meter if you're not careful. @hannaht29, did he say exactly what setting it was on when it happened?
