Took me 5 hours to diagnose a fridge that just needed a $12 start relay

I spent all morning checking compressors, capacitors, and wiring on a Whirlpool that wasn't cooling, only to find the start relay had a hairline crack nobody could see. Has anyone else chased a simple part for way too long because of bad luck or weird symptoms?
