Took me 6 months to figure out I was killing compressor start relays

I kept replacing start relays on Whirlpool refrigerators only to have them fail again in a few weeks. Then I noticed I was using a cheap multimeter that read 0.2 ohms off on the low range. Has anyone else had a bad meter mess up their diagnostics on sealed systems?

Oh man, "cheap multimeter" is exactly what got me too. I had an old $20 one from a hardware store and it would drift all over the place when checking resistance. Swapped to a Fluke 101 and suddenly my relay checks were spot on. Never threw out the old meter though, I use it now for basic continuity checks only. Made a world of difference once I figured out the bad readings were the problem.

Got the same meter still sitting in my toolbox or did you toss it?
