Why does nobody talk about how long a simple washer pump swap can take?

I got a call last Tuesday for a Whirlpool washer that wouldn't drain. Figured it was the pump, grabbed a new one from the van, and walked in thinking I'd be done in 45 minutes tops. Four hours later I was still wrestling with a corroded mounting bracket and a wire harness that was zip-tied in the dumbest possible spot behind the tub. Every time I thought I had the pump free, some other clip or screw would fight me. Ended up having to cut two of the zip ties and replace them with new ones just to get the wires out of the way. The job paid fine but I lost the rest of my morning on what should have been a quick one. Has anyone else run into a "simple" repair that turned into a nightmare because of how the previous guy put things together?

My neighbor had a similar thing with their dryer last spring. They pulled the drum to get at a bad belt and found a wad of dryer sheets and a kid's sock jammed around the motor pulley from the previous owner. Took them almost three hours just to clean that mess out. I had a dishwasher once where the heating element was held in with a random bolt that wasn't even the right size, stripped the plastic housing when I tried to loosen it. These little surprises from whoever worked on it before always turn a 30 minute job into a whole afternoon.

Yeah but here's the thing nobody talks about... half the time those messes are from the people who swear they "fixed it themselves" right before selling the place. They shove whatever fits in there just to get it running for the inspection. Always leaves a time bomb for the next person.
