Had a close call with a rotten limb over a client's driveway in Portland last week

That "rotten limb over a client's driveway" is exactly the kind of hidden danger that keeps me up at night. You don't see the problem until the wind picks up or the ice builds up. It's a good reminder to check the trees around our own homes too, not just the job sites. Glad your close call was just a warning.

Honestly I think people worry way too much about this stuff. Most trees are fine and that limb could have hung there for years without falling. Constant checking just makes you paranoid over nothing.

Wait, have you actually seen one of those "fine" limbs come down though? I used to think the same way until a big old oak branch snapped right over my own driveway during a thunderstorm. It missed my car by maybe a foot and left a dent in the concrete. After that I started keeping an eye on any deadwood overhanging where I park or walk, just checking it once or twice a year. It's not about being paranoid, it's more like a five minute look around to spot the obvious stuff that could actually hurt someone. I mean, most trees are fine for sure, but those couple of bad limbs are not worth the risk if you ask me.
