Heard a customer say stump grinding was just 'big weed whacking' and it stuck with me

I was on a job last Tuesday in a neighborhood outside Portland, grinding out a big maple stump that had been sitting there for years. This older guy walks by with his dog, stops, and says 'Looks like you're just weed whacking with a bigger machine.' I laughed it off at first, but later I kept thinking about it. There's some truth there if you squint - we're both removing unwanted vegetation, just at different scales with different risks. But what he didn't see was the time I spent checking for root spread near their sewer line, or the fact I had to dig down 18 inches to get below grade for their new patio. It made me appreciate how much hidden knowledge goes into even the 'simple' jobs we do every day. Has anyone else had a customer reduce your work to something basic like that?

I had a guy watch me trench in a new water line last spring and call it "glorified gardening" right as I was about 10 feet from their septic tank.

Man that's rough. People have no clue what goes into the hidden stuff.
