Rant: People still think you can just top a tree and it'll be fine

I keep seeing topped trees in my neighborhood, and the new owners always say the old owners did it 'to keep it small'. Saw a huge silver maple get butchered last fall, and now it's just a mess of weak, fast-growing water sprouts. It's not pruning, it's just making a future hazard. What's the worst topped tree you've had to deal with?

It's just a plant in someone else's yard. Maybe they like how it looks, even if it's not proper technique. Not everything has to be done by the book.
