Realized I was topping trees wrong for 10 years after a mentor watched me work

I was making flat cuts instead of angling them away from the branch collar, which caused water pooling and rot every time. Has anyone else had to unlearn a bad habit from just doing it the same way for too long?

Used to roll my eyes at that advice until I saw the rot myself.

Moisture rot? Seems like a stretch unless you're trimming oaks in a swamp lol.
