Showerthought: I was hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains last weekend and saw a massive oak with a lightning scar that had been filled with concrete. Is that still considered a good practice?

Check if the concrete traps moisture inside.

Remember my friend who built a shed base last summer? He didn't check for moisture like @phoenix_campbell88 said, just poured concrete right over plastic sheeting. A year later, the whole thing smells like a wet dog and the wood frame is rotting out. Turns out water pooled underneath and had nowhere to go. Now he has to rip it all out and start over, which is a huge pain. That's a solid tip about checking for trapped moisture.

That friend of yours learned the hard way that concrete hates moisture about as much as cats hate water. Nothing like a science experiment in rot to really drive a point home.
