Picked up on something reading your post - trimming oaks in Austin is completely different than trimming them pretty much anywhere else in Texas because of the live oak wilt issue. The timing of cuts matters way more than the cut technique itself down there, you gotta be done before February or after July when the sap beetles aren't active. Spent a whole summer learning that the hard way when half a neighborhood's oaks started showing wilt symptoms after I trimmed them in March, never made that mistake again.

Oh man, @ryan_nelson you hit the nail on the head with that one! I made almost the exact same mistake in San Antonio a couple years back, trimmed a big live oak in late March and by June the whole street was dealing with wilt. The sap beetle thing is no joke, you really can't mess around with those prime months or you're basically asking for trouble.
