Spent 6 years topping trees with a pole saw before an old timer in Fresno asked why I hate shade
I was doing contract work in Fresno back in 2019, cutting every leader I could reach on a big valley oak because it was the fast way to clear power lines. An old timer on the crew watched me for about 10 minutes, then asked if I wanted the tree to live or just look small, and explained that topping forces weak regrowth that snaps in wind within 5 years. How do you all explain this to homeowners who just want the tree shorter and don't care about the long term?
The thing nobody brings up is insurance. When that weak regrowth snaps and lands on somebody's house or car, the homeowner is the one on the hook, not the guy who topped it. I tell them straight up: I'm not creating a future claim against your property just so it looks shorter today. Some still say cut it anyway, so I hand them the number for the guy who did it wrong last time.
