Spent an hour talking to an old forester about root pruning this weekend

He said if you cut roots closer to the trunk in fall instead of spring you get way less shock on the tree, and after trying it on a big maple yesterday I can already see a difference in how the leaves are holding up, has anyone else had luck with fall root pruning over spring?

Totally, I tried it on a lilac once and it bounced back way faster.

Huh, really? I gotta say my experience was totally different. I tried that method on my viburnum last spring and it took forever to come back. Looked half dead for almost a whole season before it finally pushed out new growth. Maybe it depends on the plant type or the timing of when you do it.
