Warning: picked a pole pruner over a chainsaw for crown work, big mistake

I mean, I grabbed a 12 foot pole pruner to clean up a live oak in Austin last month thinking it'd be safer, but the damn thing kept binding on 3 inch limbs and I almost took a fall. Has anyone else had a pole pruner fail on cuts they'd normally handle with a gas saw?

Buddy of mine tried the same thing out in dripping springs and the pole bent back like a noodle on a knot. He ended up having to climb the tree anyway to untangle the damn thing, which is exactly what he was trying to avoid. Now he just hauls the gas saw and brings a good ladder, lesson learned.
