Wound dressing job changed after one customer's blunt comment

Year back I coated every pruning cut over 3 inches with that black sealant, thought I was doing it right. A retired forester watched me on a red oak in Dayton and said, 'You're sealing in decay, not sealing it out.' I looked it up and he was right, the tree needs to callus on its own. Now I only clean the cut edge smooth and leave the rest open, saved me an extra 45 minutes a job. Anyone else stop using wound paint after an older arborist set them straight?
