Appreciation post: my old professor emailed me about a pottery sherd I dug up in college
He said the rim style I found in a box of dirt in 2011 doesn't match anything from that site, which means I might have pulled up something 200 years older from a deeper layer. Back then I just wanted the credit hours, but now I'm going through my old field notes like it's a treasure map. Anyone else have a dig they brushed off at the time that turned out to matter?
Man, that is wild! A rim sherd sitting in a box for over a decade and now it might be the oldest thing from the site? What made your professor go back and look at it again, was he going through old collections or did you send him a photo? And when you say 200 years older, are we talking a whole different time period, or just an earlier phase of the same people? I'd be dying to know what your field notes say about how deep that box actually came from.
